Information:
According to the mythology of ancient Greece, raspberries were once as pure white as the driven snow. Apparently they didn’t develop their deep ruby color until the birth of Zeus. According to an old tale, when Zeus was a baby he was as colicky as he would become powerful. One day, a nymph passing the crying baby decided to find something to soothe him. She came across a raspberry bush and began plucking the white berries. While doing so, a thorn cut her finger, causing blood to drip onto the bush. Her blood stained the berries, turning them red and the color stuck. (And who are we to argue with Greek mythology?)
The Romans evidently thought highly of raspberries as well. Roman cookbooks from the 4th century describe various methods of preparing raspberries both in beverage and meal form. During the 11th century, Knights on the Crusade trail, encountering the sweet fruit during their campaigns, wrote poems extolling their succulent virtues. The Crusaders liked them so much it is speculated that it was they who brought the berries to England, where cultivation of the fruit began in earnest. Throughout the Middle Ages, English farmers subsequently grew, hybridized and generally improved the fruit. Over the ensuing centuries, Europeans everywhere fell in love with them. During the 1700s raspberries from England were taken to the New World and North Americans fell in love with them too. (In addition to the wild varieties growing in the Americas.)
The early British farmers did an excellent job of guiding the raspberry toward its esteemed place of greatness in the world of fresh fruit. Raspberries are one of the world’s richest sources of vitamin C, manganese, fiber and a good source of vitamin A, B 1-3, iron, calcium and potassium. They’re also up near the top of the basket in terms of antioxidant strength. Raspberries are an amazing fruit - and we haven’t even gotten into how they taste yet!
Actually, do we really need to tell you how good raspberries are? They’re sweet…juicy…packed full of sweet tart flavor…what more do you need to know? Another of their greatest features is that the heavenly flavor is miraculously preserved during the freeze drying process. Our freeze dried raspberries can add a colorful touch to custom tea blends or a tasty cup when brewed into a juicy tisane on their own. To raspberries!
