So, your kid comes home from college and tells you he wants to become a Pomologist. You panic. First it was the nose-rings, then tattoos, the pink mohawk and now Pomology!? Well, you can breathe a sigh of relief. A Pomologist is actually one who studies apples and how to grow them. And, truth be told, in Today’s global economy, the position can be quite lucrative. What’s more, your son or daughter will be able to regale family members with fascinating and wonderful facts about apples, one of the oldest fruits known to humankind. They’ll come home for thanksgiving and as the family sits down to some spicy apple pie, they will no doubt explain that archaeological evidence suggests that humans were enjoying the tarty round globes as far back as 6500 B.C. As you spoon out seconds of the accompanying vanilla ice cream your budding Pomologist will without question explain that it takes the photosynthetic energy of 50 leaves to produce one apple. Or that the oldest known apple tree in America was planted in 1647 by Peter Stuyvesant in his Manhattan orchard, reputedly still bearing fruit when it was struck by a derailed train in 1866. Or that the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is actually a shortened version of the original old English “To eat an apple before bed, will make the doctor beg his bread”.
Oh the wonderful facts and tales they will tell. And if you’re really lucky, your child may cap off the apple lesson by reciting a 19th century ode from Sussex England that goes something like this:
Stand fast root, bear well top
Pray the God send us a howling crop
Every twig, apples big. Every bough, apples now.
Professional baseball player…Cardiac Surgeon…Lawyer…one can only dream their offspring pick up the noble profession of Pomology. We salute them by offering these wonderfully flavored freeze-dried apple pieces. Use them to give a tart, sweet bite to loose tea or herbal blends or as a sweet healthy snack. Oh to be a Pomologist!

Apple Iced Tea
To prepare an all-natural apple iced tea, simply infuse a handful of dried apple along with a medium bodied pot of tea. Pour over ice, garnish by adding a few apple pieces to each cup and serve. (We recommend a Ceylon tea, eg. Apple flavored black tea as a base tea.)
Freeze dried apple has countless other uses and a long shelf life. Let us know what else you can come up with!
